For under $2,000 a year, a sponsorship lets one student from a water-poor community study science or engineering full time instead of working to feed their family. It is the highest-leverage long-term water investment we make: hardware solves one community’s problem once, but a local engineer solves them for a region, for a career.
The problem hardware can’t fix
Look closely at any strong local partner we rely on and you will find someone who got an education against the odds. In the communities we serve, brilliant students are stopped not by ability but by tuition measured in a few hundred dollars — and by the simple fact that a family needs their labor today more than their degree in four years.
Without local engineers, scientists, and organizers, water projects stay dependent on outsiders forever. Every filter and treatment system we help install still needs someone nearby who understands it, can fix it, and can design the next one. The durable fix for the water crisis is local expertise — and that is built one student at a time.
The math: under $2,000 a year
The barrier is smaller than most people expect. Two costs stand between a capable student and a degree, and both are modest:
The living subsidy is the part outsiders miss. Tuition alone doesn’t free a student — if the family still depends on the wages they would have earned, they can’t attend. Replacing that income is what actually lets them focus on school. Over a four-year degree, the whole investment is under $8,000 to produce a working scientist or engineer.
Figures are drawn from the real tuition and cost-of-living our partners report for sponsored students in Papua New Guinea, the DR Congo, and Cambodia. Exact amounts vary by country and institution; some programs run to $5,000 per year where tuition or living costs are higher. We send tuition directly to the institution, and 100% of a sponsorship reaches the student — our founders cover every operating cost, as our bylaws require.
What a sponsorship actually includes
A sponsorship is more than a tuition check. It is a four-part package designed to produce a graduate who is ready to lead water work at home:
Paid directly to the university — the student never handles the money, and the institution confirms enrollment.
Replaces the wages the student would otherwise earn, so studying full time doesn’t mean their family goes without.
Paid work alongside our local water partner on active clean-water projects — the degree, applied in the field.
One-to-one guidance from a volunteer PhD or professional engineer in the student’s own field.
Why it’s the highest-leverage investment we make
We obsess over impact-per-dollar. On our project economics, hardware is already remarkably cheap — a gravity membrane filter reaches a family for a few dollars a person. But hardware depreciates, and it solves one community’s problem once.
A sponsored engineer or scientist does something hardware can’t: they compound. One graduate can design, build, and lead water projects across a whole region for decades — and train the next people who do the same. Science and engineering are also durable, in-demand careers; there is no shortage of work in the field, so the graduate’s own future is secured at the same time their community’s is.
The best clean-water technology we can fund is a person who spends their life solving it.
This isn’t a theory — it’s why we’re here
Some of our own volunteers come from the very communities we serve — places that lacked clean water when they were growing up. Someone sponsored their university education. They became skilled, successful engineers and scientists, and then turned that knowledge back toward home, starting the projects that now bring their communities safe drinking water. Our work in Papua New Guinea exists because that cycle already happened once.
That is the flywheel a sponsorship starts: a student becomes an expert, the expert becomes a leader, and the leader lifts the next student. It is the opposite of dependency — our role shrinks as theirs grows, exactly as it should.
Clean Water Help in the field
Our partners PALPER (DR Congo) and KCCO (Cambodia) nominate promising students from the communities where we work, with students also supported in Papua New Guinea. Partners choose students who will return and serve locally, and support them through their studies; we vet the nominations, send tuition to the institution, match each student with a mentor, and report progress to sponsors every year.
